6th Classes - Beech + Laurel Blog
Welcome to 6th Class!
From Aoife, Patrick, Siobhán and Elaine on the 6th class team, we'd like to extend a massive welcome to all our new 6th class students this year! We're going to have a great year!
Well done to Laurel and Beech Classes for completing the final mile of their marathon kids program today! Everybody thoroughly earned their medals and T-shirts today!
In Science this month we are looking at Forces - we began our work exploring rubber as a stretchy force that can be loaded with energy and released. When we were happy with our designs we tried them out in the classroom - some of them needed some tweaking. It was interesting to see how high some of the shots went. The next day as it was Outdoor Classroom Day we went outside to fire them!
Wednesday marked our least session with Ciarán who was our 'Run, Jump, Throw' coach - we finished on a high with the High Jump!! It was tricky but we had great fun having a go. We were going so fast most of the photos are a little blurry.
Dear Parents/Guardians of 6th Class,
As you are aware this month is Relationships and Sexuality Education (R.S.E.) month in P.E.T.N.S.
R.S.E. encourages children and young people to reflect on the relationships in their lives and to learn how to develop relationships which are based on mutual respect. This helps them to build a foundation for more intimate relationships in later life. R.S.E promotes a holistic understanding of sexuality and provides young people with information about their physical development and sexual health.
R.S.E. in the school aims to support the work of parents, who are the primary educators of their children in this area.Teachers use the lessons outlined in the R.S.E. Manual (Department of Education) and Busy Bodies programme (H.S.E.) - please find links to these resources below for you to read in advance of the lessons so that you know what content is being covered and can be prepared to address any questions your children may have, in particular those questions that may be outside the scope of the 6th class curriculum.

We love a good dress-up day!! It's always a nice way to end the half-term. Enjoy mid-term break everyone!
This month we were working in groups and learning about different vital organs. This week we presented our projects to the rest of the class; asked and answered questions. Everyone did a really great job and we all learned lots about organs.
We have been studying the human body in sixth class and we were very excited to apply this knowledge to a fabric and fibre project where we created models of the human digestive system. Each group used a variety of different textures and colours to create their models. Well done everybody!
Laurel and Beech class are on our fourth week of running laps for marathon kids: we are aiming to complete a full marathon over the next few weeks! So far we are about half way towards our goal.
We have been so fortunate to have a visiting teacher Ciarán facilitating athletics training each Wednesday in 'Run, Jump, Throw'. We have been learning relay, hurdles and throwing techniques. Today we used training javelins and were learning about technique, strength, grip and direction. We are looking forward to trying out real javelins next week!
We hope everyone is working on their applications to secondary school - this morning we had a Zoom call with a teacher and some students from Hansfield ETSS who answered lots of our questions about secondary school and Hansfield in particular. Good luck everyone with your applications!
